Last summer, Simmy moved to Los Angeles to revitalize Stephen Cohen's photo l.a. art fair. The fair's brand suffered major setbacks last year and Simmy was recruited as its new fair manager to restore it to its former glory. She brought Tali on board as her programming director. This project had them thinking: How do we preserve the history of the fair while moving it towards a stronger future? How do we honor the imprint that Stephen has left on 21st century photography while respecting where the medium is going? If you have ever read Turgenev's "Fathers and Sons" you will understand the conundrum they have been pondering the last few months.

Their answer came in the form of American photographers William Eggleston and Stephen Shore. Pioneers of color photography and visions of Americana, Eggleston is the canon and Shore carries the torch. They are honoring both photographers this year at our Opening Reception Thursday night, a benefit gala for LACMA's Wallis Annenberg Department of Photography. For ticketing information please visit www.lacma.org.

Simmy has incorporated artLA projects into the fair, which will bring a full year of exhibitions and public art projects to LA from a roster of exciting curators, local and international. No surprise here, TS+ Projects will be one of the curating teams involved. artLA projects kicks off at photo la this week! Here are some highlights:

TS+ Projects brought on Dawn of Man to create installations and moving projections. The collection of a dozen videos depict a variety of looping scenes and short character vignettes, ranging from graffiti-writing grannies to dancing space-monkeys. They will be projected onto the exterior walls of the landmarked Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, facing Main St., Santa Monica.

Nic Rad will perform "The Celebritist Manifesto: A Stirring Defense of James Franco as the Greatest Artist of this Generation if Not All Time." Nic Rad's Celebritist Manifesto was initially performed as a part of the #class projectat Ed Winkleman Gallery in New York- organized by William Powhida and Jennifer Dalton, the show was selected by New York Magazine senior critic Jerry Saltz a top ten year in art pick for 2010.

TS+ Projects and Paul Young of Young Projects teamed up to present a special screening of “Fire in my Belly," by David Wojnarowicz. The video that was recently removed from Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture, an exhibition at the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery. artLA projects is proud to take a stand against censorship in the Arts. (And shout out to LGBT for loaning us a projector to screen the film).
